Article -> Lessons Learned from The Little Prince

Date Added: October 2018

The Little Prince is a famous book by Antoine de Saint-Exupery. A quote from Saint-Exupery states, If you want to build a boat, do not begin by collecting wood, cutting boards, or assigning tasks. Begin by awakening the souls of your workers a desire for the vast and boundless sea.

This is a great statement about the ability to inspire others and create an amazing team or corporate culture, or even a stronger family. This is also a statement about leadership, whether one has a specific role or title. It is about having the courage to know yourself and a desire to make the world better.

Your world may be your family, your team or your organization; or it may really mean the world. You get to choose. Regardless, it begins by awakening your own soul to the possibilities of who you are and what you can be. The type of co-worker, leader, spouse, child, friend, etc. you choose to be. There is a boundless sea for each us if we are willing to seek it.

At some point in each of our lives we had some dream or longing to make a positive impact, to make a difference, to be part of something larger than ourselves. For many, life got in the way. We had a family, got a job, had health issues, focused on ourselves instead of the dream(s) we once had.

We can still have our family, job and friends; and we will still have our struggles. Despite this, re-awaken your soul, think back to your dream(s) and determine how to start moving things forward. Remove the barriers holding you back. Reinvigorate yourself as the change must begin with you.

Gandhi is attributed to saying, Be the change you want to see in the world. He was absolutely correct. I have often written about Heart and Soul Inspired Leaders who are individuals, regardless of age, role or title; who embrace their personal gifts, strengths and passions to positively impact others and change the world.

This begins with your ability to understand and embrace your gifts, strengths and passions. It moves to acknowledging your dreams, the boundless sea, the something larger than yourself. It transcends to positively impacting others. And it concludes with changing the world; however, you define your world.

As human beings we seek to unite with each other and develop relationships because we know we are stronger together than alone; yet, it always takes one individual to start transformation. As human beings, we are built to act, because while we have dreams, we want to actually do.

And we want to leave a legacy (even though I dislike this term as it can be self-serving). If the legacy is about creating lasting, sustainability change which will endure long after we leave earth; in ourselves, family, organization, community or world; we not only become better people, we make the environment around us better.

Have the courage to speak up. The courage to better understand yourself. The courage to want to make your environment better. The courage to dream.

Listen to the Little Prince. To Saint-Exupery. To Gandhi. To Yeghiaian. To yourself or anyone else you feel can help influence you to awaken your soul and be the Heart and Soul Inspired Leader you are capable of being and the individual who longs for the vast and boundless sea to positively impact others and change the world. The world needs you.
