Date Added: December 2014Happy New Year! A new year brings planning for everyone. We plan to go to the gym, lose weight and eat better. More detailed personal planning of improved health relates to a life-long personal mission. Nearly 11 years ago, I created a personal mission; and it’s amazing how much it continues to direct my decisions – even if I don’t always pay attention to it. The mission guides me personally, at work, at home and in my humanitarian endeavors. Creating a personal mission takes time; it is not a one day event. While it may be modified over time, if done well, your mission’s core should remain consistent over time. The short version of my mission is to positively impact others to leave earth a better place. This is guided through my faith and inspiration to focus on service, excellence, understanding, security, uniqueness and integrity. There is more detail; although this summarizes the key elements. Those that read my monthly columns or know me well recognize how I live this out. Others may not see it as closely, which is okay; because it’s my personal mission. It’s for me – not others. As you create your mission, think about the following: what makes you happy, what are you passionate about, what fills your heart, what would you feel empty without. Write down initial thoughts to each question. The next day, look back at what you wrote and clarify items. Go through this process a few more days, and then blend responses into a more formal mission. Once you are comfortable with your mission draft, share it with 3 to 5 people you know and trust to provide honest feedback if it is realistic and exemplifies you. Modify it accordingly and begin living it. Don’t wait until it’s perfect because you may wait forever. Keep it with you so you are always living it. Hang it at home and at your office. I even put mine on my phone for an even easier reminder. While we never know what the future holds, a personal mission assures you of living each day as prosperous as possible.
