Article -> Take Time to Stop & Look Around

Ferris Bueller said, “Life moves pretty fast. If you don’t stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it.” Maybe it’s time for each of us to “stop and look around” at how we treat others.

One could argue people are the root of everything good – and everything bad – in this world. People run organizations. People make products. People run countries. People harm our environment. People harm other people. People create war.

Too often we hear how “people are our greatest asset” or “I just want everyone to get along;” however, actions speak louder than words.

What about the person that cuts you off while driving – only to see the “coexist” sticker on the bumper? The person that doesn’t hold the door for you when entering a place of worship. Or the CEO that continuously makes poor decisions, harming the organization; yet, others lose their jobs?

We all can be hypocrites – me included. Despite this, here are 10 suggestions for treating others more positively.

  • Treat people the way you want to be treated.
  • Demonstrate dignity, fairness and respect to others.
  • Communicate. Communicate. Communicate.
  • Smile and be personal.
  • Do what you say you’ll do.
  • Ask, listen, learn and empathize.
  • Respect others.
  • Be honest.
  • Adhere to your personal beliefs and values.
  • Display humility.

While not rocket science, consistently following these 10 items should make it much easier to get through our current troubled times.

A CEO of a multi-billion firm recently expressed how difficult it is to reduce the current workforce or release low-performing employees. “Just because we’re unable to hire someone or we have to let an employee go doesn’t mean that we don’t care. At the end of the day, we’re all human beings and should care about each other.”

How true. Here’s hoping this article has helped make a positive impact on you.
